Troops Deploy For Diyala Offensive

Voices of Iraq reported that troops arrived in Diyala province on July 11 for the planned offensive there. As reported previously, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced that Diyala would be the scene of the next government crackdown in June. The province has been a trouble sport as detailed in a backgrounder. Diyala has multiple divisions between Sunnis and Shiites, Shiites versus Shiites, Sunnis against Sunnis, Arabs opposed to Kurdish expansionism, rival Sons of Iraq groups, and suffers from a weak government. The Diyala campaign will be the fifth for Maliki after the ones in Basra, Sadr City, Mosul, and Maysan province. It might also prove to be the most difficult if Baghdad decides to go after all the different armed groups there.
